After Manny Pacquiao’s devastating 2nd round knockout win over Light welterweight king Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, most boxing aficionados has been waiting for an announcement as to who will Manny Pacquiao share the ring and exchange fists with next. Who is Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent? A few names have been mentioned, but there has been no final word yet from the Pacquiao camp or from Top Rank’s Bob Arum. October 17 will be the date for Manny Pacquiao’s next fight, but there is no name yet as to who he will go against.
In this series of articles, we are going to list down a boxer or two in each post and we’re going to dissect (so scientific) every boxer compared to Pacquiao’s. If you are reading this post, you can also suggest a boxer that you want us to check. You can check this site every now and then for the next feature or bookmark it. Who will be Manny Pacquiao’s opponent come October 17?
After breaking down Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr and Edwin Valero, here come’s our next boxer. Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent is, “Sugar” Shane Mosley. We’ve seen the best of “Sugar” Shane Mosley for the past years and we thought he was done and needs to hang it up, but he proved everyone wrong by knocking out then WBA Welterweight Super Champion, “cement” boy, Antonio Margarito. Shane Mosley is the current WBA Welterweight Super Champion and he has won world titles in three weight divisions, once holding the Lightweight, Welterweight and Light Middleweight.
Manny Pacquiao vs. Sugar Shane Mosley? That is a sweet matchup. Sugar Shane has been campaigning to fight Manny Pacquiao next, so let’s try and break down everything to see if it is really a good matchup.
Name: Manny Pacquiao
Age: 30
Division: Light welterweight
Stance: Southpaw
Height: 5′6½”/169cm
Reach: 67′/170cm
Record: 49W(KO 37)-3L(KO 2)-2D
Rounds boxed: 293
KO%: 68.52
Name: Shane Mosley
Age: 37
Division: Welterweight
Stance: Orthodox
Height: 5′9″/175cm
Reach: 74″/188cm
Record: 46W(KO 39)-5L(KO 0)-0D
Rounds boxed: 352
KO%: 75
Factors:
Speed: Pacquiao A+ Mosley A-
Power: Pacquiao A- Mosley A+
Defense: Pacquiao A Mosley A
Intangibles: Pacquiao A+ Mosley A+
I will rate Mosley’s power an A+, higher than Pacquiao’s, becuase of his highet KO% compared to Pacquaio and to add, Mosley was against bigger men in Lightweight, Welterweight and Light Middleweight. Shane has an advantage in height and reach which he can use effectively against Pacquiao by using jabs which could stop Pacquiao from attacking him from the inside, but only if he can maintain that through the whole fight. The 5 losses on Shane’s resume could be deceiving because those 5 losses only came in the hands of 3 persons, Winky Wright, Vernon Forrest and Miguel Cotto and all of them where decision losses and not KO’s, while Pacquiao also lost to 3 boxers, 2 KO’s early in his career and a decision loss to Erik Morales.
This is a tough fight to call unlike the past two possible opponents that we have featured. Sugar Shane Mosley has proved that he is not done yet by knocking out the bigger and tougher Antonio Margarito in his last outing. This could be a good fight and a bad fight for Manny Pacquiao. If he fights and defeats Mosley, he has another hall-of-fame bound boxer added in his resume. Also, Manny Pacquiao’s critics has been saying that Pacquiao has avoided African-American fighters, and Shane Mosley is a legit “BIG” name African-American fighter with a resume to boast too. The bad side of this fight though is, Mosley is 37 (turning 38 before October 17) and if Manny Pacquiao wins against Mosley, again critics will make and argument that Pacquiao has beaten another washed-up-past-his-prime fighter.
The verdict, again is a tough one to call. It depends on he sticks to their gameplan to neutralize each other. Shane Mosley still has a lot of tank left in his tank so he can still survive 12 rounds against Pacquiao. If Shane can stick with jabbing and countering, he might steal this one from Pacquiao, but if Pacquiao can show another great outing with his speed, then that might just be the factor which might prove the difference. For now, I can’t give a sure prediction, but if Shane Mosley vs Manny Pacquiao will happen, it is less likely that it will end in a KO because both men know how good each one is and respects each other’s power. It will be a decision and to whom the W will go, I’ll give a split decision win to Pacquiao due to his speed.
What can you say?

UD or 7 round KO Mosley. I don’t buy Pac’s win over Delahoya and Ricky Hatton fought a fight where he abandoned his gameplan. Unless age or weight drain occurs, it’s Mosley all the way, baby.

yeah Shane Mosley has a granite chin that could really be dangerous for Pacquiao..

Pacquiao is still waiting for the upcoming fight results between Cotto-Clottey and Mayweather-Marquez.
Let’s here the official announcement later.

Well, the power and stamina will go to shane mosley as well as his chin. am a filipino that will support pacquiao all through out. am also big fan of mosley and respects his boxing skills. What i can say about pacman is that he has the advantage when it comes to speed, stamina, and agility. He is also armed with power and has a better defensing skills, the disadvantage is his height and reach as well as the character of being over confident. Pacman has developed his boxing skills “from a street slugger to a complete boxer”….Let pacquiao & mosley do the talking when they collide in the ring.

As long as the fight is 143-lb and NEITHER fighter weigh more than 147-lb (welterweight limit) at fight time, it will be Pacquiao by KO in cold-blood!!
Same thing for Mayweather and Cotto.
Mosley can neither use age as excuse (as he has just knocked out Margarito) nor weight drain because 143-lb is just 4-lbs below 147 (Pacquiao’s 52 of all 54 fights were below 140-lbs)!
Mosley’s only chance is if he weigh 150-lb++ at fight time because of his huge size/height/reach advantages!!

Dareyouni, It’s pretty obvious that you’re not one of pacman’s follower. Maybe pacman did’nt go to high school and college but he’s smarter than hatton and de la hoya. Its not his fault that the brit abndoned his gameplan. he’s as silly as u are.

@roy
they can set a catchweight for the weighin, but they can never set a “day of the fight weight” at 147.. if the pacman camp does that, they are disabling mosley..
are they afraid of mosley?

Pacquiao is unbeatable. I don’t think that Cotto is the man who can beat Pacquiao.
June 8th, 2009 @ 10:52 pm
I don’t know. Pacquiao always surprises the whole world.
June 8th, 2009 @ 10:53 pm
You’ll never know maybe Shane Mosley is the man who can defeat Pacquiao.

I want to see pac-man or sugar beat the breaks off Mayweather. When is the self appointed lb for lb best, fitty sense’(of which he has none) buddy gonna take on a true champion? Then I’ll look to this match up. One of these boxers need to challenge “money” before he “retires” again.

Pacquiao though is recognized by the world and the Ring Magazine, Bible of Boxing as the no. 1 Pound per pound boxer in the world, many people cannot accept his fact.Pacquiao is one of the greatest boxers of all times winning titles after jumping into different dweight divisions, a very exciting fighter and fights toe to toe like a man not like mayweather, whom i think should took dancing and not boxing, who’s afraid of being hit. Dela Hoya is not weight drained, he is in fact still a great boxer and not yet old to retire, Mosley is older than Dela Hoya. Just face the reality that great boxers like Marquez, Dela Hoya becomes beaten and look like old when they face Pacquiao, the same also goes to Hatton, when fight like a man he was knocked out unconscious. Pacquiao was knocked out and beaten when he was young and raw, and not at his prime as a complete boxer. He will never be beaten. Just accept that pacquiao has a power punch with blinding sppeed that boxers cannot see coming just like what happened to hatton. The same fate will happen to Mosley when he face pacquiao in the ring. he will be beaten and knocked out when he fights toe to toe. No height, weight or reach advantage will overcome pacquiao. Let’s face it, the damed guy is very talented and we’re lucky to have this fighter seen at our generation.I hope someday Pacquiao will fight a heavyweight champion just to prove himself as one of the best fighters ever lived in the world

Sugar Shane Mosley once again shows how much heart he has, fighting Pacquiao will be a breeze,Sugar Shane is too strong, hit too hard, and speed will neutralize pac-mans,and his chin is granite, this is a fight Pac-man should not take, Sugar Shane is going to take Pacquiao apart.
