After Manny Pacquiao’s great all-around performance and 12th round knockout win over WBO Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto, most boxing aficionados has been waiting for an announcement as to who will Manny Pacquiao share the ring and exchange fists with next. Who is Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent?A few names have been mentioned, but there has been no final word yet from the Pacquiao camp or from Top Rank’s Bob Arum. Manny Pacquiao’s nex fight will be set for March 13, 2009.Our first series of Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent before the Miguel Cotto fight did get good hits and comments and now we are back to the drawing board as to who Manny Pacquiao will fight next.

In this series of articles, we are going to list down a boxer or two in each post and we’re going to dissect (so scientific) every boxer compared to Pacquiao’s. If you are reading this post, you can also suggest a boxer that you want us to check. You can check this site every now and then for the next feature or bookmark it.

Manny Pacquiao’s Next Opponent : Joshua Clottey

After the negotations for the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Mega Fight was aborted due to a hundred million reasons and excuses, Manny Pacquiao is now set to fight a workhorse, a tough former champion and a tough title contender. On his last outing, Manny Pacquiao made history by winning his 7th Division Championship belt by beating Cotto. Now Manny Pacquiao is set to face the person who Miguel Cotto barely defeated, former IBF Welterweight Champion, Joshua “Grand Master” Clottey.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey may not spark that much interest from you at all since Clottey lost to Miguel Cotto, the man Manny Pacquiao dethroned and destroyed on his last outing, but in my own opinion, he is the most credible opponent currently available on the Welterweight division. A tough former champion and a boxer who has shown skills and class on all his wins and 3 losses. Joshua Clottey is currently ranked the Top 7 Welterweight of the world and he is the most credible boxer worth fighting and watching right now as #2 welterweight Floyd Mayweather’s fight with Pacquiao fell, #3 and #5 Shane Mosley are fighting this January 30, #4 Antonio Margarito is not available and #5 Miguel Cotto was just recently destroyed by Manny Pacquiao. Let the statistics for Manny Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey generate the hype for this fight.

The Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey is the best option there is after the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather did not push through. Though, Manny Pacquiao may be able to cement his mark on history if he pushed for the Manny Pacquiao vs Yuri Foreman, but I would consider the Foreman fight an easy fight compared to Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey. Foreman may be a threat due to his size, but Clottey is a workhorse and has a heart of real warrior. He has good defense and a decent offense. I would also say that Clottey has a very decent chin. He may have been knocked down on round 1 when he fought Miguel Cotto, but he has never lost due to a knock out. That proves his chin and his defense is indeed atop of the others. A win by Pacquiao over Foreman would give him his 8th division world title but skeptics would say that he chose a “soft” chamption, while a win by Pacquiao against Clottey may not bring him any championship, but at least, skeptics could say that he fought the best welterweight available.

His 3 losses were: a DQ loss from Carlos Baldomir, Unanimous Decision loss against Antonio Margartio and a Split Decision loss to Miguel Cotto. Joshua Clottey fought Antonio Margarito with a broken hand since round 3 and he still made it to end of round 12. If he also kept his workrate against Miguel Cotto, he would have won that fight too. The flash knowdown on the first round did make a difference on the scorecard. Does Joshua Clottey have what it takes to beat Manny Pacquiao? YES, only if he keeps the same work rate from rounds 1 to 12. He failed to keep his workrate against Miguel Cotto and that caused him the decision. Joshua Clottey can handle speed as he has handled the same speedy lefty in Zab Judah. I am in no way saying that Judah’s speed matches Pacquiao’s speed, but Judah is the only opponent that Clottey has faced that is somewhere near Manny Pacquiao’s speed.

With Clottey’s chin and stamina, I see this card going to the scorecard and I would give a Unanimous Decision to Manny Pacquiao once again due to Pacquiao’s speed, punch output and power. Clottey will be able to win via Split Decision if he will be able to neutralize Pacquiao’s movement and maintain his defense since, if not, UD for Pacquiao. Anyway, I would love to see this fight as Clottey is more of a threat compared to Yuri Foreman.

Let’s get it on! March 13 Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey!

Last on our list of possible opponents was WBA World Light Middleweight Champion, Yuri Foreman, the light-fisted rabbi champion. On his last outing, Manny Pacquiao made history by winning his 7th Division Championship belt by beating Cotto. Now, to continue on with our series, we are going to feature a boxer that may help cement Manny Pacquiao’s legacy. A fight for glory and a fight for the most debated crown as #1 Pound-for-Pound. A boxer most renowned for being a villain, a boxer known for his superior defense, Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather Jr. A self-proclaimed, and some die-hard fans claim too, World’s best boxer.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.The fight of the Century. The fight that could beat all boxings’ box-office records. A fight for the title “Best Welterweight” and a fight for the title “#1 Pound-for-Pound boxer/fighter”. Mayweather, a boxer who proudly claims he is the best and nobody can beat him and take away his 0 Loss. Pacquiao, a boxer who humbly accepts any takers and let the people decide if he is the best. Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Floyd Mayweather, a 5-division world champion while Pacquiao is a 7-division world champion. A fight for pride. A fight to be number 1. A fight for the ages. The fight that will top most fights. Enough with the hype and on with the stats.

The MEGA FIGHT Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.is the best thing that will happen to boxing. Who would have thought that they would reach to a fight date as early as March 13? Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr is a must-see as this fight could really go either way. I have Pacquiao edging Mayweather with his power but Mayweather also edges Pacquiao with his defense. Mayweather has a clear reach advantage and he can use this to jab-and-run against Manny Pacquiao, which he normally does in every fight that is why some Mayweather haters fondly call him “Gayweather” because he rarely engages and is comfortable just boxing his way to a win. He just engages when he sees that the opponent is tired and exhausted. That I should say is a very smart way to win but that does not excite the people at all. Pacquiao had trouble with Miguel Cotto’s jab in the 1st and 2nd round of their encounter but Cotto failed to keep up the phase. Floyd Mayweather may follow the same strategy and jab all the way and potshot every now and then until the 7th or 8th round and he can make his assault after that.

While Mayweather guns and runs, Pacquiao can also utilize his speed to chase down and take down Mayweather. This will not be a very easy fight for Pacquiao. If Freddie Roach will not be able to design a glameplan on how to neutralize Mayweather’s offense while breaking his defense, I can see Pacquiao lose via Unanimous Decision against Mayweather. Oh yes Pacquiao has all the speed and power to send out 20 power punches in 10 seconds but will any of it penetrate and hit Mayweather? I doubt it will. Floyd Mayweather is know for his superior defense. He is nicknamed Pretty Boy for the simplest reason as not any of his fights has caused that much damage to him or his body due to his style of fighting. The only effective way to pin down Mayweather is to put him the corner but that would not be a very easy task as Mayweather has mastered the right way of escaping the ropes while potshotting the opponent, remember what happened to Ricky Hatton? Ricky Hatton tried to pin down Mayweather and he failed shamlessly! Is Freddie Roach stupid enough to design the same scheme for Pacquiao? By the way, this will not just be Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr as this also a fight of strategies by Freddie Roach and Floyd Mayweather Sr. Who will design the best strategy to beat the opponent?

I see this fight going to the scorecard and it could still go either way. Mayweather is too smart to engage with Pacquiao as he knows what Pacquiao can do to him. If Mayweather jabs and run, this MEGA Fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao will be the most boring fight Pacquiao as been in and it will be a Unanimous Decision win for Floyd Mayweather. If Pacquiao can break through Mayweather’s defense with his punches and scoring on them cleanly while avoiding Floyd’s counterpunches to avoid getting knocked out, Manny Pacquiao for a Split Decision. If Mayweather wins, he will be as much as a loud mouth as ever and if Pacquiao wins, then we can shut Mayweather’s mouth!

A fight for the ages and you don’t want to miss this fight! What can you say?

After Manny Pacquiao’s great all-around performance and 12th round knockout win over WBO Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto, most boxing aficionados has been waiting for an announcement as to who will Manny Pacquiao share the ring and exchange fists with next. Who is Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent? A few names have been mentioned, but there has been no final word yet from the Pacquiao camp or from Top Rank’s Bob Arum. Our first series of Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent before the Miguel Cotto fight did get good hits and comments and now we are back to the drawing board as to who Manny Pacquiao will fight next.

In this series of articles, we are going to list down a boxer or two in each post and we’re going to dissect (so scientific) every boxer compared to Pacquiao’s. If you are reading this post, you can also suggest a boxer that you want us to check. You can check this site every now and then for the next feature or bookmark it.

Manny Pacquiao vs Yuri Foreman.

In the past series, we have featured boxers such as Shane Mosley, Edwin Valero, Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr and Miguel Cotto. I predicted that Pacquiao will win against Cotto in a Split Decision due to Pacquiao’s speed, but I was slightly wrong as Pacquiao picked Cotto apart with speed and power in 12 rounds. Manny Pacquiao made history by winning his 7th Division Championship belt by beating Cotto. Currently, a talk for a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown is on the way but there is no confirmation yet, now let’s search for other contenders. On the Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto undercard, Israeli and soon-to-be rabbi Yuri Foreman won the WBA World light middleweight title by picking apart then-champion Daniel Santos in 12 rounds. The WBA World light middleweight title! Are you thinking what I am thinking?

Manny Pacquiao vs Yuri Foreman. Yuri Foreman who? Yuri Foreman is an undefeated boxer who just won the WBA World light middleweight title. Does he deserve to be mentioned as Pacquiao’s next opponent? Oh yes he does! For the sole reason that he holds a 154lb championship belt, the WBA World light middleweight title. 154 is 7 pounds north of the current belt of Pacquiao’s current WBO Welterweight Title, his 7th weight division title, and beating Yuri Foreman for the WBA World light middleweight title would mean that he is going to get his 8TH WEIGHT DIVISION TITLE! Yuri Foreman is the next possible opponent for Manny Pacquiao. So now, the statistics:

Name: Manny Pacquiao
Age: 30
Division: Light welterweight
Stance: Southpaw
Height: 5′6½”/169cm
Reach: 67′/170cm
Record: 50W(KO 38)-3L(KO 2)-2D
Rounds boxed: 305
KO%: 69.09%

Name: Yuri Foreman
Age: 29
Division: Light Middleweight
Stance: Orthodox
Height: 5′11″/180cm
Reach: 72″/183cm
Record: 28W(KO 8)-0L(KO 0)-0D
Rounds boxed: 178
KO%: 27.59%

Factors:
Speed: Pacquiao A+ Foreman B+
Power: Pacquiao A+ Foreman C-
Defense: Pacquiao A Foreman B+
Intangibles: Pacquiao A+ Foreman B-

Yuri Foreman is a raw champion. His only major test is against then-champion Daniel Santos and some say also with his Split Decision win against Andrey Tsurkan. With that, Manny Pacquaio would be a big favorite to win against Foreman. Foreman is light-fisted. He only has 8 KO’s in 28 wins but one reason could be he was against bigger men who can withstand his punches or it could be that he really does not possess any power at all which could be a big problem is he will face the Filipino Dynamo. On all the factors, speed, power and defense, Manny Pacquiao wins over Yuri Foreman. It would be best for Foreman to fight more rated fighters and challenge Pacquiao after to make Yuri a more worthy opponent for Pacquiao. Roach and Bob Arum has hinted that they will consider Foreman if the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather showdown fails to materialize.

This fight, Manny Pacquiao vs Yuri Foreman, is a very easy fight to call. Foreman, like Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr, is still raw though he is a champion which could be a big bait for Pacquiao to get. Foreman is an easy target for Manny Pacquiao and he can’t hurt Pacquiao basing on his KO Percentage. Well, he can jab his way for 12 rounds but don’t ever think Pacquiao will not be able to get in and pound him. He is big and long, but Manny Pacquiao has proven that size doesn’t matter if you are against him. If ever the Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather pushes through, Floyd Mayweather is planning to talk a tune-up fight first in the UK against Matthew Hatton to shake off the ring rust, Manny Pacquiao can take on Yuri Foreman too as a tune-up fight and rake-in cash and his 8th Division World Title.

If Manny Pacquiao vs Yuri Foreman, I will obviously give the W to Pacquiao via a 6th or 7th round TKO. Pacquiao has proven every now and then that he is not a person who backs down from any challenge and that size doesn’t matter. Beating Yuri Foreman does not really give that much credit since Foreman is raw and if he wins critics will discredit his 8th Division world title but who cares? On his way to another history-breaking feat, I wouldn’t mind him having Yuri Foreman as the tune-up fight before the MEGA FIGHT Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather.

What do you think?

Early Results from Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto Fight Results Undercards from Las Vegas:
—–
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.(40-0-1, 30KOs) pounded out a twelve round work-man like unanimous decision over Troy Rowl (25-3-0, 7KOs) in the co-main event at the MGM in Las Vegas, Nevada. Chavez used his height and reach to his advantage to largely out-box Rowland for the majority of the bout. After twelve rounds were complete Chavez was ahead on all three cards comfortably in what was a competitive fight.
—–
Middleweight Yuri Foreman (28-0, 8 KOs) won a spirited twelve round unanimous decision over WBA World Junior middleweight title Daniel Santos (32-4-1, 23 KOs)moments ago at the MGM Grand on the “Firepower” televised undercard. Foreman boxed well from the outset and scored a stunning knockdown in the middle rounds and sealed it with another knockdown in Round 12. Foreman put the fight out of reach, winning on all three official cards by scores of 116-110, 117-109 and 117-109. With the victory Yuri Foreman captured the WBA junior middleweight title and improved to 28-0, 8 KOs. Yuri Foreman is the new WBA World Junior middleweight champion.
—–
Former world title challenger and “Contender: Season One” star Alfonso Gomez (20-4-2, 10 KOs) upset WBC #7 welterweight Jesus Soto Karass (24-3-3, 16 KOs), winning a six round technical decision. A cut on the right eye by an unintentional headbutt in round three bothered Gomez thereafter. The fight was stopped on Round Six due to the cut. The cards read 58-54, 57-55, 57-55, all for Gomez. Soto-Karass was deducted points for low blows in rounds three and four.
—–
Top Rank’s hot Olympian middleweight prospect Matt Korobov (8-0, 6 KOs) took a one-sided six round unanimous decision over James Winchester (10-3, 3 KOs). Scores were 60-54 on all cards.
—–
Eden Sonsona def Elion Kedem via TKO at :17 in the second round. Sonsona dropped Kedem with a hard left hand in the first round and blitzed Kedem right as the bell sounded in the second as referee Joe Cortez was forced to wave off the bout.
—–
Flyweight Richie Mepranum (15-2-1, 3 KOs) won a six round split decision over Ernie Marquez (9-6-2, 3 KOs). Scores were 58-55, 57-56 Mepranum, 57-56 Marquez.
—–
Lightweight Abner Cotto (5-0, 3 KOs), Miguel’s second cousin, won a six round unanimous decision over Luis Guzman (3-5, 2 KOs). Scores were 59-55, 60-54, 60-54.
—–
Super Welterweight Rodrigo Garcia remained unbeaten with a workmanlike four round unanimous decision over Martin Vierra (5-3-1, 2 KO’s). Garcia (5-0 4 KO’s) landed the more effective and harder punches of the two. All three judges scored the bout 40-36 for Garcia.

I have made a preview on this fight on my “Manny Pacquiao’s Next Opponent” series post. I am standing by my prediction that this is going to go 12 rounds and the W goes to Pacquiao by Split Decision. Pacquiao knows how dangerous Cotto is with his huge frame, strength and power. That alone will make Pacquiao cautious enough that he will not be engaging much on Cotto. While Cotto will be going for head and body shots, Pacquiao will be going in and out. Pacquiao will fire quick shots on Cotto while going out of danger by the time Cotto is about to unload body shots on him. Pacquiao’s speed will be a main factor

Cotto is dangerous for Pacquiao, while Pacquiao is also dangerous for Cotto. For the full fight preview that I did on Manny Pacquiao VS Miguel Cotto long before it was scheduled, please don’t mind visiting this link.

The former WBO Light welterweight champ, former WBO Welterweight King, which he lost to “cement” boy Antonio Margarito and also the current WBO welterweight king after beating Michael Jennings in his comeback fight after his first loss to Margarito. A proven boxer, a tested champion and a legitimate pound-for-pound contender, Miguel Cotto really deserves to be mentioned and be named as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto. Philippines vs. Puerto Rico. I can already see Bob Arum smiling. The matchup is real music to my ears. I have been a big Miguel Cotto fan for a long time now and I also admire Manny Pacquiao because I am a Filipino. So, now, the statistics.

Name: Manny Pacquiao
Age: 30
Division: Light welterweight
Stance: Southpaw
Height: 5′6½”/169cm
Reach: 67′/170cm
Record: 49W(KO 37)-3L(KO 2)-2D
Rounds boxed: 293
KO%: 68.52

Name: Miguel Angel Cotto
Age: 28
Division: Welterweight
Stance: Orthodox
Height: 5′7″/170cm
Reach: 67″/170cm
Record: 33W(KO 27)-1L(KO 1)-0D
Rounds boxed: 214
KO%: 79.41

Factors:
Speed: Pacquiao A+ Cotto A-
Power: Pacquiao A+ Cotto A+
Defense: Pacquiao A Cotto A+
Intangibles: Pacquiao A+ Cotto A+

Power vs. Power, I think Miguel Cotto has an edge over Pacquiao. Speed, clearly, Manny Pacquiao has shown his speed and no doubt he is quicker than Miguel Cotto. If Pacquiao will fight Cotto toe-to-toe, the advantage will be to Cotto, but if Pacquiao will fight Cotto from the outside, then the advantage would be on Pacquiao because he is too quick. Some critics and haters said that Cotto was exposed when he was knocked out by Antonio Margarito, but Margarito a had granite chin and possibly plaster hands (literally), and that proved the difference of the fight. He was hitting Margarito well on the early part of the game until Margarito rallied late to finish Miguel Cotto off. Miguel Cotto’s lone loss came at the plaster hands of Antonio Margarito (Margarito lost my respect because of that issue) which he then partially erased from our mind’s by KO’ing Michael Jennings for the WBO Welterweight crown.

This one is an easier fight to call compared to Shane Mosley vs. Manny Pacquiao. The determining factor that could be a difference on this probable fight between Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao is speed. Miguel Cotto has proven his power in the Light Welterweights and Welterweights, but as critics say, Miguel Cotto has a suspet chin. Miguel Cotto needs to get past granite-chinned Joshua Clottey this June 13. Joshua Clottey lost a Unanimous Decision to Antonio Margarito. If Miguel Cotto gets past Joshua Clottey unscratched and beats Clottey to a pulp, then we can indeed consider Miguel Cotto as Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent. Manny Pacquiao beating Miguel Cotto could further cement Pacquiao’s place in boxing history, while Miguel Cotto beating Pacquiao could raise Cotto’s credibility as a champ and put Cotto back into the top pound-for-pound list.

Miguel Cotto could really be very dangerous for Manny Pacquiao because of Cotto’s strength and power, but I see Shane Mosley as a bigger threat than Miguel Cotto against Manny Pacquiao though Miguel Cotto did beat Shane Mosley. Miguel Cotto has power, head movement and all that good stuffs all the good boxers have, but I just don’t see him outdoing Pacquiao’s speed which could be a big factor if ever Manny Pacquiao vs Miguel Cotto will happen. Both boxers have proven power and skills which could mean this will really be a good fight, but Manny Pacquiao will get the W, Split Decision (I hate to give this verdict cause I am a Miguel Cotto fan).

On a side note though, hey can setup an Philippines vs. Puerto Rico card. Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto, Ivan Calderon vs. Brian Viloria, Juan Manuel Lopez vs. Bernabe Concepcion and Nonito Donaire vs. Jose “Carita” Lopez.

WHAT CAN YOU SAY?

After breaking down Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr and Edwin Valero, here come’s our next boxer. Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent is, “Sugar” Shane Mosley. We’ve seen the best of “Sugar” Shane Mosley for the past years and we thought he was done and needs to hang it up, but he proved everyone wrong by knocking out then WBA Welterweight Super Champion, “cement” boy, Antonio Margarito. Shane Mosley is the current WBA Welterweight Super Champion and he has won world titles in three weight divisions, once holding the Lightweight, Welterweight and Light Middleweight.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Sugar Shane Mosley? That is a sweet matchup. Sugar Shane has been campaigning to fight Manny Pacquiao next, so let’s try and break down everything to see if it is really a good matchup.

Name: Manny Pacquiao
Age: 30
Division: Light welterweight
Stance: Southpaw
Height: 5′6½”/169cm
Reach: 67′/170cm
Record: 49W(KO 37)-3L(KO 2)-2D
Rounds boxed: 293
KO%: 68.52

Name: Shane Mosley
Age: 37
Division: Welterweight
Stance: Orthodox
Height: 5′9″/175cm
Reach: 74″/188cm
Record: 46W(KO 39)-5L(KO 0)-0D
Rounds boxed: 352
KO%: 75

Factors:
Speed: Pacquiao A+ Mosley A-
Power: Pacquiao A- Mosley A+
Defense: Pacquiao A Mosley A
Intangibles: Pacquiao A+ Mosley A+

I will rate Mosley’s power an A+, higher than Pacquiao’s, becuase of his highet KO% compared to Pacquaio and to add, Mosley was against bigger men in Lightweight, Welterweight and Light Middleweight. Shane has an advantage in height and reach which he can use effectively against Pacquiao by using jabs which could stop Pacquiao from attacking him from the inside, but only if he can maintain that through the whole fight. The 5 losses on Shane’s resume could be deceiving because those 5 losses only came in the hands of 3 persons, Winky Wright, Vernon Forrest and Miguel Cotto and all of them where decision losses and not KO’s, while Pacquiao also lost to 3 boxers, 2 KO’s early in his career and a decision loss to Erik Morales.

This is a tough fight to call unlike the past two possible opponents that we have featured. Sugar Shane Mosley has proved that he is not done yet by knocking out the bigger and tougher Antonio Margarito in his last outing. This could be a good fight and a bad fight for Manny Pacquiao. If he fights and defeats Mosley, he has another hall-of-fame bound boxer added in his resume. Also, Manny Pacquiao’s critics has been saying that Pacquiao has avoided African-American fighters, and Shane Mosley is a legit “BIG” name African-American fighter with a resume to boast too. The bad side of this fight though is, Mosley is 37 (turning 38 before October 17) and if Manny Pacquiao wins against Mosley, again critics will make and argument that Pacquiao has beaten another washed-up-past-his-prime fighter.

The verdict, again is a tough one to call. It depends on he sticks to their gameplan to neutralize each other. Shane Mosley still has a lot of tank left in his tank so he can still survive 12 rounds against Pacquiao. If Shane can stick with jabbing and countering, he might steal this one from Pacquiao, but if Pacquiao can show another great outing with his speed, then that might just be the factor which might prove the difference. For now, I can’t give a sure prediction, but if Shane Mosley vs Manny Pacquiao will happen, it is less likely that it will end in a KO because both men know how good each one is and respects each other’s power. It will be a decision and to whom the W will go, I’ll give a split decision win to Pacquiao due to his speed.

What can you say?

First we had Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr vs. Manny Pacquiao, now, our next possible opponent for Manny Pacquiao would be EDWIN VALERO. As Manny Pacquiao was trying to fight the top men in the division, Valero was also trying to buff up his record by fighting patsies. As Manny Pacquiao was breezing through the division by defeating future hall-of-famers, Valero was knocking out patsies left and right to claim belts in the Super featherweight and Lightweight division.

Edwin Valero has been calling out Manny Pacquiao since God knows when, but is he really worthy to be inked for a possible fight with the current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao? Let’s try and break it down.

Reach: 67′/170cm
Record: 49W(KO 37)-3L(KO 2)-2D
Rounds boxed: 293
KO%: 68.52

Name: Edwin Valero
Age: 27
Division: Lightweight
Stance: Southpaw
Height: 5′7½”/171cm
Reach : 69″/175cm
Record: 25W(KO 25)-0L(KO 0)-0D
Rounds boxed: 51
KO%: 100

Factors:
Speed: Pacquiao A+ Valero B-
Power: Pacquiao A+ Valero B
Defense: Pacquiao A- Valero C+
Intangibles: Pacquiao A+ Valero B

Edwin Valero needs a “named” boxer in his KOed list to be worthy of being called a world-class boxer, and so far, I don’t see that in his resume. He may have been a top man in the Super featherweights and no a current WBC champion in the Lightweight (a belt Pacquiao once held), he still does not have the proven resume to fight the pound-for-pound king. For Valero, fighting Pacquiao is a hig-risk high-reward matchup, while for Pacquiao, it will be a high-risk low-reward fight. Win or lose, he’s going to bag the biggest payday in his career. If he wins, then his popularity and value will skyrocket, if he loses, it’s not going to affect him because Manny Pacquiao is just way beyond every boxer’s level.

It is a good matchup, southpaw vs. southpaw, power vs power, but for Edwin Valero to be worthy of fighting Manny Pacquiao, he might fight and beat at least 2 or 3 known boxers in the Super featherweight or lightweight division. Any former or current champion with a good resume will do. To name a few, Humberto Soto, Roberto Guerrero, Joan Guzman, David Diaz, Juan Diaz, Timothy Bradley, Jorge Barios, Nate Campbell, Michael Katsidis, Rocky Juarez and many others. If gets past those names, then the fans would be hyped up for the fight.

This one is an easy fight to call too. As long as Manny Pacquiao can avoid those early heavy bombs by Valero, then he will win via a late KO. Edwin Valero has not been tested to last for longer rounds since most of his wins are early stoppages. Also, there is too much flaw on Valero’s defense, if he makes that mistake against Pacquiao, then it will be an early night for him. All in all, Manny Pacquiao vs. Edwin Valero will only happen once Valero has buffed up his resume with known boxers, not with unknown patsies. So for now, let’s make another matchup.. ^_^

What can you say?

After Manny Pacquiao’s devastating 2nd round knockout win over Light welterweight king Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, most boxing aficionados has been waiting for an announcement as to who will Manny Pacquiao share the ring and exchange fists with next. Who is Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent? A few names have been mentioned, but there has been no final word yet from the Pacquiao camp or from Top Rank’s Bob Arum.

In this series of articles, we are going to list down a boxer or two in each post and we’re going to dissect (so scientific) every boxer compared to Pacquiao’s. If you are reading this post, you can also suggest a boxer that you want us to check. You can check this site every now and then for the next feature or bookmark it.

First off, Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. Yeah, I know, Julio is too big, too tall, a complete mismatch and not worthy at all to fight Pacquiao, but as we mentioned, we are going to be featurig boxers who have been mentioned to fight Pacquiao (though every fighter has been calling Pacquiao out).

After winning a 10 round Unanimous Decision against Luciano Cuello for the WBC Latino Light Middleweight title, Bob Arum mentioned Manny Pacquiao vs. Julio Ceasar Chavez as a possible fight for the young Julio Ceasar Chavez Jr. My first reaction was, “Bob Arum is a big joke!”, but as news circulated, many people thought about it as a good match. Now we are going to break down the “possible” fight.

Name: Manny Pacquiao
Age:	30
Division:Light welterweight
Stance:	Southpaw
Height:	5′6½”/169cm
Reach:	67″/170cm
Record: 49W(KO 37)-3L(KO 2)-2D
Rounds boxed: 293
KO%: 68.52

Name: Julio César Chávez
Age:	23
Division: Light middleweight
Stance: Orthodox
Height:	6′0″/183cm
Reach:	73″/185cm
Record: 39W(KO 29)-0L(KO 0)-1D = 40
Rounds boxed: 161
KO% :	72.5

Factors:
Speed: Pacquiao A+ Chavez B-
Power: Pacquiao A+ Chavez B
Defense: Pacquiao A- Chavez B
Intangibles: Pacquiao A+ Chavez B

I considered Pacquiao’s power as an A+ while Chavez’ as B- based on the quality of opponents both men has faced. Though Chavez has the higher KO percentage, his past opponents are C or B fighters while Pacquiao’s KO power has been proven against quality and some hall-of-fame bound opponents. Manny Pacquiao’s defense and speed has improved through the last fights in higher weight classes and we have not seen how far he can go as a Light welterweight because his last fight lasted only for 2 rounds, but with that as a proof, I’m giving him an A+.

This fight is an easy fight to call. The only advantage that Chavez has is reach, height and size. Chavez Jr is just too slow and too raw for Pacquiao. Though the height difference is really big, I can see Pacquiao KO’ing Chavez. Pacquiao is going to bombard Chavez with bombs from every angle and Chavez would be too slow to react making him a 6′0″ punching bag.

A win by Chavez would raise his market value rocket fast while a win by Pacquiao would do less because Chavez is not a proven fighter yet. If ever this fight happens, and it happens in the welterweight limit, Chavez is going to go down within 10 rounds for sure. Honestly, I don’t Julio Ceasar Chavez vs. Manny Pacquiao to happen, so wait for the next edition of”Manny Pacquiao’s Next Opponent”.

What can you say?
